Ijen Crater

Ijen Crater is a part of Meru Betiri concervation. It is the biggest crater lake in Java. Besides crater, there are buffallo conservation, and amazing stone climb. Ijen crater on the top of Ijen mountain and give you the fantastic surround. From the top of maountain you can see all of Banyuwangi adn Situbondo area, also Bali Strait.

The sulfur crater lake lies between a natural dams of deeply etched rock. It is 200 meters deep and contains about 36 million cubic meters of steaming acid water, shrouded in a smelling swirling sulfur cloud. Inside the crater the different color and size of stones are found. Indeed the crater of Ijen is beautiful garden of stone as well.

The view of sulfur miners who climb and go down to the crater is also amazing. A man puts about I 10 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket, before he descends the mountain slope to sell his load, carrying the same basket, going in the same direction, digging the same mineral. It is the natural picture that can be seen everyday.

People arround of Ijen mountain belive that water from Ijen crater can threat the exim disease and also can make them look like young for along time.

Beautiful Mountain with a traditional sulfurs mine. It is also known as Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen) as the mountain has a big crater lake (Crater = kawah in Indonesian language) The mountain can be reached from the city of Bondowoso, approximately 4 hours driving from Surabaya.

It can also be reached from Banyuwangi. Mount Ijen is located in one mountainous area together with Mount Raung & Mount Merapi (these two are active volcanoes). This mountainous area is also quite close to the Baluran National Park. Best time to visit: June - September Visitors must walk up to reach the summit. Warning: no smoking in the crater area! A new resort recently opened in this area – Ijen Resort & Villas.
